Range of application locknut DIN 981
It is used to connect shafts and hubs or to couple the inner ring of a rolling bearing to the shaft. It is a machine component used to secure the shaft axially on the hub, for example in gearwheels. It is used for quick-release connections.
Technically, it belongs to the group of screw nuts, has a cylindrical outer shape and a thread on the inside. It has additional grooves on the outside into which a hook wrench fits. This is used to tighten or loosen the nut.
Material and standardized marking
The most commonly used material is steel. The starting product for production is high-quality alloyed steel wire.
DIN 981 recognizes different designs of these special nuts. As standard, they have an ISO metric thread and bear the abbreviation KM. If the edge is thinner, the code is KML. Designs with trapezoidal threads are given the letters HM, reinforced designs are additionally given a T.
