A so-called lock washer describes a washer that consists of a flexible sheet steel that is used to lock nuts so that they cannot turn. These are mainly so-called locknuts. Locking washers in accordance with DIN 5406 have a tongue on the inner diameter that engages in a fixed machine component or a shaft. There are also tongues on the outer diameter, which can be fastened in a groove of a nut or around the hexagonal structure of a nut. This reliably prevents the nut from shifting or detaching.
In industry, the locking plate has established itself as an indispensable element in construction technology and has been an indispensable element in mechanical engineering and industry since the invention of screws. These connections are still among the most important detachable screw elements used in almost all machine components and tools. The possibilities for using these sheets have steadily expanded over the years. Locking washers are essential to ensure that a screw is securely connected to the machine part. These components are common machine components that are present in almost every construction. They serve as a locking mechanism and also set a limit as a guide element for other machine components.
Lock washers for DIN 5406 locknuts have a fixed standard that adapts to different nut designs. There are different standards here, which are described according to fixed factors. They are only suitable for the areas of application specified for them. The MB design is considered standard, another variant is the so-called MBL. It has a thin edge and is used for locknuts of the KML design. Another design for locknuts is called HM. This has a trapezoidal thread. Instead of a locking plate, a bracket is used here, which is fastened using a hexagon head screw. These safety brackets also comply with the DIN 5406 standard and are known as MS.
